Positive EV betting: how +EV sports betting actually works

Positive expected value (+EV) betting means only placing bets where the price you get is better than the true probability of the outcome. It is the same math sportsbooks use — run in reverse, against them.

1. Every posted price includes vig

A −110 / −110 market implies 52.4% on both sides — 104.8% total. That extra 4.8% is the sportsbook's margin. Before a price can be judged, that margin has to be removed. Use the odds converter to see implied probability for any price.

2. Devig to find the true line

Devigging normalizes both sides of a market back to 100% so you get a fair, no-vig probability. Sharp books and market consensus devig into the most accurate estimate of true probability available publicly. Run any two-sided market through the devig calculator.

3. Calculate expected value

EV per dollar = (fair win probability × profit on a win) − (fair loss probability × stake). If the fair probability is 55% and you can bet it at +100, you are getting a price worth 50% — a 10% edge. Anything above roughly +2% is a bet; the strongest spots typically sit at +5% or higher.

4. DFS apps are the softest market

PrizePicks and Underdog post a single line and a fixed payout instead of moving prices with the market. When a sportsbook consensus says a player's fair line is 24.6 points and a DFS app still lists 22.5, that gap is measurable edge — no handicapping opinion required.

5. Size bets so variance can't bust you

A 5% edge still loses plenty of individual bets. Fractional Kelly sizing scales your stake to your edge and bankroll so a cold stretch does not end the run. Size a bet with the Kelly calculator.

6. Track closing line value

Closing line value (CLV) — beating the price the market settles at — is the fastest proof that a process is real, long before win rate stabilizes. PickSniper grades every posted pick and publishes hit rate, ROI, units and CLV on the public results page.

Doing this automatically

Manually devigging hundreds of markets across a slate is not realistic. PickSniper scans major sportsbooks and DFS apps continuously, devigs each market, compares it to every available price, and ranks the results by edge and a confidence-weighted Sniper Score.
